Do you have EDGERANK on Facebook?

2011 August 30

Edgerank Do you have people say “did you see what such and such said on Facebook”  and you think “no I did not see that…they are my friend,  why didn’t I see that”  Well you may have 200 friends but you only see the post of about 20 or 30 regularly.  The others have not stopped posting they just do not have “Edgerank”.

You may not realize it, but Facebook only displays some of the stories generated by your friends — if it displayed everything, there’s a good chance you’d be overwhelmed. Facebook is always trying to make sure their sites and apps are publishing stories that make the cut.

You may or may not have noticed but you have two setting at the top of the wall.  TOP NEWS – MOST RECENT

If a friend has a high “edgerank”  they will show in TOP NEWS.  If they don’t have a high “edgerank”  they may not even show in MOST RECENT.

So what is “EdgeRank”  you may ask?  Well I could not even find a “Wiki” on EdgeRank.  Pretty crazy.

So let me give it a shot!   “Edgerank” is like a report card on Facebook.  That’s what it is to me anyway.  If you are using Facebook for business you better know if you are passing or flunking.  Because if you are flunking it is really a big waste of time.

Everything you post of Facebook is considered an “object”.   Comments, photos, videos, Links are all “objects” to Facebook and every “object” is scored by Facebook which in turn gives you”edgerank”.

The minute you or your brand posts an “object” on Facebook your edge begins to be created.  Tagging, liking, commenting…these are all edge creators.

So lets drill a little deeper into the equation above.

There is a Wiki for Affinity.

Affinity: is a word used in a variety of fields, usually to indicate some kind of preference, relationship or a potential or actual closeness between two entities.

It’s not how many friends you have…it’s how many relationships you have with those friends or customers.

So the Affinity factor is based on the interaction you have with someone’s “objects”  on Facebook.

The second element is weight.  It’s all about “made you look”.  To Facebook eyeballs =  $$$.  I hate to tell you but it’s not about you….it’s all bout Facebook.  The longer you view an “object”  the more “weight” Facebook gives to that “object”.   Comments are like gold for your edgerank because it takes more time to leave a comment than to click “like”.  And the longer you interact the more the Facebook fairy likes it.

And last but now least there is “time decay”.  In this ever changing, constantly updated world, yesterdays news just will not make the cut.  Keep it new and fresh.

This is just the “edge”  (no pun intended…well actually it was intended) of the info on “edgerank”.

Watch for more on Facebook Edgerank coming soon to a blog near you.

Disclaimer:  I know I have overused the (“) key in this blog.  I couldn’t help myself  :)

Observation:  Ever notice that all the new stuff like Facebook, edgerank etc does not show up in spell check?  I’m just sayin!!

Great article Candi! I guess that’s the only advantage that people with a low number of friends have is that they don’t miss anything! ha ha ha! Thanks for the link to Edgerank, that’s a great tool to have.

    Take care!
